Nomadism
A quest for a community.

When I was a young boy, I strongly felt the desire to wander and experience freedom on a daily basis. I dreamed of joining the ranks of theses gray bearded vagabonds, having unexpected words of wisdom for everyone. I thought that, being both vagabond and scholar, I could prove to people that we should not "judge a book by its cover", that we should not judge a person from its appearance.

Once in a while, I do not have a fixed residence. I must admit that I know many people that would accommodate me, in the case that I would have a problem or wouldn't find any place to go, so its easier to feel safe. But I never had to use those commodities because offers and opportunities of a roof are many and pleasant. I never was this well served. People leave their house to travel, and they wish somebody could take care of their stuff in the meantime...

For me, nomadism has many objectives.

First, it is a life without much tangible properties. Happiness is experienced through relations with people, contact with nature, everyday life. No physical comfort can be taken for granted.

Next, it helps to develop the adaptation capability. To live in different places, with different people. Moreover, I learn a lot of new things from the work and services I exchange to people that accommodate me.

It's also a way not to encourage overconsumption. Many individuals own more things that they could possibly use or need. I consider more logical to use the overstock that these people already own than to buy brand new stuff for my personal use. Communal use of material and space seems to me more pleasant and responsible (in order to preserve the limited resources). On top of that, nomadism allows to save a lot of money : this can eventually be used for project considered more important (such as helping endangered beings).

Finally it is for me a practical way to get in contact with all kinds of communities. I feel that group living is highly interesting. I know that it can be quite difficult to organize functional communities, particularly if they are not inspired by a cultural (or even traditional) system that already works. I had the opportunity to observe both successful and unsuccessful communities.

Eventually, I would like to end my nomadism to join a community. I tend to prefer countryside communities, but I am also interested to urban ones, wishing they would be more green. I would like to join a community which shares values with me (sharing, equity, equality, cooperation, care of the environment) and with which I feel a pleasant link, rationally and emotionally.
